Spades

Spades is a four-player classic game played in teams of two. The point is not just to win as many hands as you can . Before each round you and your partner have to guess how many " tricks " you can win . Points are awarded for correct guesses, but a large overshoot can cause problems, and not reaching the target costs a point for the team. This means a lot of calculating on each card played.

An Overview of Spades

The four players sit opposite each other in a game. The person sitting across from you is your partner, the other two are the opposing team. The game is played for 13 tricks and everyone is dealt 13 cards.

A characteristic of Spades is that the suit of Spades is always trump. Any other suit can be beaten by a Spade card. But players are not immediately free to play Spades as they wish , they still have to follow the rules for each trick .

The game continues until one team reaches 500 points. Winning too many tricks is not necessarily a good thing; you score based on the number of tricks you promise to take beforehand.

How to Play Spades: The Basics

Before the cards are dealt you have to guess the number of tricks you think you can win. Your partner makes their own prediction and the two figures are added together to make the overall team goal.

If you bid three tricks and your partner bids four, then your side must take at least seven tricks in that round. It is not essential that each player reaches their precise predicted number, the crucial factor is that the total number of tricks won by the pair matches the target.

Before you bid, look at your hand and consider the number of spades you hold, your high cards, and the winning potential of each suit.

Spades Scoring

Normally you would score 10 points for each trick taken according to the team's goal. If your team bids a total of 7 tricks and you achieve that number of tricks or more, the scoring is based on that bid.

If, however, the team bid 8 tricks and only won 6, then the team could be penalized depending on the number of tricks committed to. So, you would rather not be betting too much when you don't have a very strong hand.

Another interesting feature is that tricks won beyond the target are called "bags". But they give you a few points. But if you get too many bags, you get a penalty. So when the team has reached its goal you have to decide whether or not to go for more tricks.

What are Nil and Blind Nil?

Spades offers high-risk betting options for players confident in their ability to control the game.

• Nil: You bid that you will not win any tricks in the round. If you do this successfully you will get a big point bonus. However, if you accidentally win even one trick, it's a penalty.
• Blind Nil: This is a riskier option. You've got to declare before you see your hand. The payoff is greater but the chance of failure is much greater.

Tips for playing Spades effectively

• Count Spades: Knowing how many Spades remain unplayed helps you assess the risk of your high cards being beaten.
• Bid realistically: Don't set your target too high just because you have a few high cards.
• Observe your partner: Spades is a team game, so your plays should support the overall strategy.
• Don't underestimate bags: Winning too many tricks can become a problem as bags accumulate.
• Keep the high cards: Aces or Kings are good to have but not always good to play them early. Monitor depleted suits: If a player is out of a particular suit, they can use spades to capture tricks in subsequent rounds.
• Be aware when an opponent approaches 500 points: you may need to change your strategy to prevent them from ending the game.e.
• Only choose "Blind Nil": if you are willing to take the risk: This is not a move to be used frequently.
